Hi Peter

Thanks for visiting the site. Unfortunately with all the work on the car I've been a little lazy updating the site. If you have a facebook account I have a page on there that is right up to date with all my build pictures. The address is: http://www.facebook.com/GT40builder. Also I think you'd benefit from signing up to gt40s.com forum and chatting with a few owners on there, it's a great information source. My build diary on there can be found at: http://www.gt40s.com/forum/gt40-build-logs/29836-tornado-build-www-gt40builder-com.html

Hello trevor, I am reasearching at the moment the best and most cost effective way of building a gt40, your web site is very informative, awsome! I buit a cobra which I finished three years ago, however, the gt40 would be a realisation of a boyhood dream. I am leaning towards a Tornado, I read some comments on the gt40 forum which suggested the tornado chassis is not as stiff as others, your comments on this would be of some value as your findings have led you to buy a tornado.

best Regards

Hi John

As I don't have my engine in the car at the moment it's difficult to know if the engine would fit. Andy at Tornado says the cars are designed to fit the small block 302 units and winsor block 351's. I am not that clued up on the engine and mounting it etc yet as I have yet to get that far into the build. I would say that it might be a little tight to fit a 427 into but speak to Andy. He will be able to tell you the best engine to go for and also can could possibly make you a custom chassis to fit the 427.

A question for you Trevor. What is the max engine size you can put in your Tornado GT40, or what are the dimensions of your engine bay? I know only small blocks are used.

The reason I ask is I want to build a GT40 MKI (not MKII) and place a Boss 429 in it. Wow factor, not a race factor.

Here are the differences for the 289/302 and the Boss 429.

The 429 is 5" longer, 6" wider, 2.5" taller, and 135# heavier. Is the Tornado engine bay larger than the 429 size of 34L x 30W x 30H?

I would appreciate you taking a moment to measure your car for me and you can email me.

Thanks,

John

Hi Desmond

Good spot, however the rear bulkhead does now have the inspection hatch area cut out. I cut and drilled the panel as one complete sheet of aluminium to ensure the panel didn't bend etc and then removed it and cut the hatch out. You can see this here: bulkhead cutout

The rear bulk head does not appear to have an inspection hatch cut out.If this is intentional you will find it very hard to change the aircon and alternator belts or even get at the thermostat housing.
But you may have thought of this and taken action. In which case ignore my observation.
